2004 Forum for World Evangelization report (www.lausanne.org/2004) Various members of the Internet Evangelism Coalition participated in the 2004 Forum. Several were involved in the Media & Technology Issue Group led by Wing Tai Leung. Wing Tai gives an overview of the issues and questions facing their group, as they work to develop a strategic framework for addressing the challenge of media and technology as it relates to global evangelism. By Wing Tai Leung – Breakthrough Ministries in Hong Kong The media were widely used in biblical history. Noah used the Ark, Moses used the staff, Nehemiah used the city wall, Jesus used the mud for healing the blind and God used the rainbow, the dove and the cross. The media had been a symbolic means to signify spiritual meanings in the past. However, in cities and most societies of today, the media become the central shaping force and the demise of our cultures and values. Media set the agenda in a society. Media propaganda in the forms of advertising and political persuasion is shaping the minds of the young. The rise of communication technologies such as the Internet and digital media creates new threats and opportunities for evangelization. Globalization is slowly wiping out local media and cultures - and with them the indigenous identities of the people. Western media and technologies are dominating the international flow of information. The Church needs to examine the media and technology as pertaining to world evangelization. |
